Understanding Forced Perspective in Fantasy Film and Television

Forced perspective is a tool often used. You wouldn't know it though. If you've seen any film or episode of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Game of Thrones, you've watched something that utilized forced perspective. If you don't know what that means, The Film Theorists are here to help you. It's sort of crazy to think about how much work this all must be, but it's also really cool.

Didn't I tell you it was cool? Seriously, do you realize how much work that is? No wonder this stuff takes forever to film. And costs so much. If you didn't just watch the video, let me try to break down what forced perspective is. Basically, it's forcing people to view things in a certain perspective. Yes, I'm very helpful.

You know what I'm talking about.

Alright, these examples are a little ridiculous. But now you know exactly what I'm talking about. And you can see why this would work in fantasy film and television. A giant is reasonable and possible in that world because it's fantasy. It isn't all that simple. I'm just trying to give you an idea of what I'm talking about if you're too lazy to watch the video. But I recommend watching it because it's really cool and maybe you'll respect fantasy more for it. Just watch the video.
